PADI Self-Reliant Diver
Develop the Skills to Become a More Independent Diver
The PADI Self-Reliant Diver course is designed for experienced divers who want to develop greater independence, self-sufficiency and problem-solving ability underwater.
Although recreational scuba diving normally uses the buddy system, there are situations where experienced divers can benefit from being less dependent on another diver. Photographers, videographers, dive professionals and experienced divers may all benefit from developing stronger self-reliance skills.
Importantly, you don't have to intend to dive alone to benefit from the course. Becoming more self-reliant can also make you a stronger and more capable member of a buddy team.
What Will You Learn?
The course looks at the additional planning, equipment and skills required when a diver cannot simply rely on a buddy to solve a problem.
Topics include:
- Independent dive planning and risk management
- Gas consumption and gas planning
- Redundant life-support equipment
- Managing equipment problems independently
- Using an independent redundant gas supply
- Navigation and maintaining awareness of your exit point
- DSMB deployment
- Responding to problems without immediate assistance from another diver
The course includes three training dives, during which these skills are developed and practised in realistic diving situations.
PADI Self-Reliant Diver Prerequisites
To enrol in the PADI Self-Reliant Diver course, PADI requires you to:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or hold a qualifying certification
- Have at least 100 logged dives
- Successfully complete a skills assessment with your PADI Self-Reliant Diver Instructor before beginning the course dives
Because this is a course for experienced divers, good buoyancy, general diving competence and comfort in the water are important.

Is Self-Reliant Diver the Same as Solo Diver?
The course develops the knowledge and skills needed to plan and conduct dives independently, but earning the certification does not automatically mean that you can dive alone everywhere.
Local regulations, dive centres, boats and individual dive sites may require divers to dive with a buddy regardless of certification.
Even if you never intend to make a solo dive, the skills developed during Self-Reliant Diver training can make you a more capable and confident diver.
Equipment and Redundancy
A major part of becoming self-reliant is ensuring that the failure of a single piece of equipment does not leave you without a safe solution.
This includes carrying an independent redundant breathing-gas supply and understanding how much gas you actually need to deal with an emergency and return safely to the surface.
The course therefore provides an excellent introduction to the concepts of redundancy, gas management and disciplined dive planning that become increasingly important in more advanced diving.
