Official PADI Tec Basics course information
Have you ever seen divers wearing two tanks on their back instead of one? That equipment is called a twinset, and it is used in a branch of scuba diving called technical (tec) diving
If you are considering getting into technical diving, want to try twin tanks, or you are already a side mount diver wanting to change configurations, this course is for you.
PADI Tec Basics focuses on learning to use technical diving equipment within the no stop limits of recreational diving.
The PADI Tec Basics course is the best way to be introduced to all the benefits of twin tank diving (more gas, redundancy, self reliance, preparation for technical diving) without the time and financial commitment of a full tec diving course.
Prerequisites
You need to be over 15, be at least Advanced Open Water diver, and be a qualified Nitrox diver. If you need these courses let us know.
What You Will Learn
Once you have paid your deposit you will receive your PADI E learning materials. These are for you to study in your own time BEFORE you arrive at the dive centre for your course.
You will learn to assemble and fit your twin tanks, backplate wing and harness, the same equipment used in demanding technical deep and cave diving. We then move to the pool to learn and practice the basic skills which include air sharing with the long hose, valve shut downs, technical diving propulsion including frog kick, back finning, and helicopter turns, safety drills DSMB deployment and ascents.
You then can conduct the optional open water dives, typically conducted at one of our local wrecks such as the T13. https://go2similan.com/local-diving/t13-underwater-museum/
Equipment
We provide regulators, tanks and wing for your dives, however we recommend you own a few pieces of equipment that will be useful for this course, but also in your day to day, recreational diving.
- Tec diving fins (short, stiff wide bladed fins EG OMS slipstream or similar)
- A DSMB with finger spool, (dual baffle / oral inflation option preferred)
- Thigh pockets, can be on your exposure suit or ‘tec shorts’
- A dive computer. (We recommend Shearwater)
Continue Your Training
If you get a taste for technical diving your next step is probably into PADI Tec 40, which is the first level of technical diving, where you will learn to dive beyond the NDL into decompression diving.
